Luvata wins prestigious IEEE Spectrum ACE Award

APRIL 02 2014

Technology voted most likely to benefit humankind
Luvata, a world leader in metals manufacturing, heat-transfer technology and engineering and design services, was awarded the Technology in the Service of Society ACE (Annual Creativity in Electronics) Award at the 10th Annual EE Times/EDN Awards ceremony held yesterday in San Jose, California.  The awards program honors the people and companies behind the technologies and products that are changing the world.

IEEE Spectrum is a magazine edited by the 'Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers'. The Technology in the Service of Society ACE award is presented to the company voted  by a panel of EE Times and EDN editors as well as independent judges as the having the technology with the greatest potential to benefit humankind.

Luvata's contributions to the world's most powerful 11.75 Tesla MRI being built by CEA Saclay in France were featured in an IEEE Spectrum article from October 2013.  By producing improved superconducting cables, Luvata unleashes the potential for more powerful MRI scanners with better resolution.  This could open the door for MRIs to detect early indications of brain diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's and perhaps refine the methods developed to treat those illnesses.

"The millions of people owing their continued health to an MRI machine's diagnosis can attest to this technology's practical importance," suggests Dr. Hem Kanithi, Vice President of Business Development with Luvata Superconductors.  "And the more we advance the applications of superconductors, the more they will touch our lives," believes Kanithi.  "Luvata is incredibly honored to receive this award."

Today Luvata manufactures over one-third of the world's MRI superconducting wire and is distinguished from its competitors by supplying superconductors to all four of the major MRI coil manufacturers: Phillips, Siemens, GE and Mitsubishi.  In addition Luvata superconductor strands are used in high energy physics projects such as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, in Switzerland, the world's largest highest-energy particle accelerator and fusion energy development.
